Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter (divided for onions and bread)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Thinly slice the onions and cook them slowly in a skillet over medium-low heat with about 1 tablespoon of butter until golden and caramelized, approximately 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning and to develop sweetness.
  2. Form and Cook the Patties: Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape each into a thin, round patty slightly larger than the bread slices. Season both sides with salt and pepper. Cook on a hot skillet over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich: Place one slice of rye bread on a clean surface. Top with a slice of Swiss cheese, then a cooked beef patty, followed by a generous scoop of caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and close with a second slice of rye bread.
  4. Toast the Patty Melt: Lightly butter the outside of each bread slice. Heat a skillet over medium heat and place the sandwich in it. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is perfectly melted. Press gently with a spatula during cooking to help the cheese melt and keep the sandwich together.

Notes

  • Use room temperature beef to help patties cook evenly and minimize shrinking.
  • Slowly caramelize onions to enhance their natural sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Butter the bread generously to achieve a crispy and flavorful crust.
  • Press the sandwich gently while toasting to melt the cheese faster and keep it intact.
  • Let the sandwich rest briefly after cooking to make slicing easier and prevent fillings from spilling out.
