Ingredients

Scale

Egg Base

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, optional, to taste
  • Herbs (such as parsley, chives, or thyme), to taste

Starch Base

  • 3 cups bread cubes (preferably slightly stale) or 3 cups hash browns

Cheese

  • 1 to cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend)

Vegetables

  • 1 cup chopped vegetables (bell peppers, onions, spinach, mushrooms, or zucchini)

Meat Options (optional)

  • 6 strips cooked and crumbled bacon or
  • 1 cup cooked sausage or
  • 1 cup diced cooked ham

Seasonings

  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Herbs of choice, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Cube the bread or prepare hash browns. Chop any vegetables and cook any meat you plan to use. This prep work ensures smooth and quick assembly.
  2. Mix the Egg Base: In a large bowl, whisk eggs and milk or cream until well combined. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and herbs to season the mixture thoroughly.
  3. Combine All Ingredients: Layer the bread cubes or hash browns evenly in the bottom of a baking dish. Distribute cooked meat and chopped vegetables evenly over the starch. Pour the egg mixture over everything, making sure it soaks through. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly on top.
  4. Refrigerate Overnight: Cover the casserole tightly with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to meld and the starch to absorb the egg custard fully.
  5. Bake and Enjoy: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole for 45-60 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is set. Let cool for a few minutes before serving to achieve the best texture.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread to better absorb the egg mixture and avoid sogginess.
  • Don’t overfill the baking dish; leave room for ingredients to expand.
  • Sprinkle cheese on top near the end of baking for a golden crust.
  • Test doneness by inserting a knife into the center— it should come out clean when fully cooked.
  • Assemble the casserole in advance for busy mornings or holidays.
