Fried Apple Pies

Fried Apple Pies offer a delightful combination of crispy, golden crust and warm, cinnamon-spiced apple filling, making them a comforting and irresistible sweet treat. Perfect for any occasion, these pies are easy to make with simple ingredients and can be customized to suit your taste and dietary needs.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 3 cups apples, peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup granulated or brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Dough and Frying

  • 1 package pie dough or pastry sheets (store-bought or homemade; gluten-free optional)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil recommended)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel and dice the apples into small pieces. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, then add the apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook the mixture until the apples soften and the juices thicken slightly, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool before filling the pies.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Roll out your pie dough or pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut into squares or circles, typically around 4-5 inches across, depending on your preference.
  3. Assemble the Pies: Place a spoonful of the cooled apple filling in the center of each dough piece. Avoid overfilling to prevent leaks. Fold the dough over the filling to form a pocket and seal the edges firmly by pressing with a fork or pinching by hand.
  4. Fry the Pies: Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large, heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully place the pies in the hot oil, frying in batches. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. Cool and Serve: Let the Fried Apple Pies cool just enough so the filling sets but stays warm. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with caramel sauce for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Chill the dough before frying to achieve a flaky, less greasy crust.
  • Use fresh, firm apples to maintain texture and avoid mushy filling.
  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F using a kitchen thermometer for perfect crispiness.
  • Seal dough edges tightly to prevent filling leaks during frying.
  • Drain excess oil on paper towels immediately after frying for a lighter bite.
