Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Filling

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices thinly sliced ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

Sauce

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 shallot, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional and Garnish

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional for crispy topping)
  • Fresh parsley or thyme, finely chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Pound the chicken breasts to an even, thin thickness to ensure easy rolling and even cooking without drying out.
  2. Layer Filling: Place one slice of ham and one slice of Swiss cheese evenly on each flattened chicken breast, leaving a small border around the edges for sealing.
  3. Roll and Secure: Carefully roll each chicken breast around the ham and cheese, tucking in the sides. Secure each roll with toothpicks or kitchen twine to keep the filling in place during cooking.
  4. Sear the Chicken: Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown each rolled chicken breast on all sides to lock in juices and add flavor.
  5. Make the Cream Sauce: In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium-low. Sauté minced garlic and chopped shallots until fragrant. Pour in heavy cream, stir in Dijon mustard, and season with salt and pepper. Simmer until the sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Bake to Finish: Place the seared chicken rolls in a baking dish. Pour the creamy sauce over them. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked and the cheese inside has melted.

Notes

  • Pound chicken to uniform thickness for even cooking.
  • Do not skip searing to develop deeper flavor and seal in moisture.
  • Add fresh parsley or thyme before serving for brightness and color.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of chicken broth or cream to loosen it.
  • Use toothpicks or kitchen twine to secure rolls for easy slicing after cooking.
