Ingredients

Scale

Beef Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes or salsa
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Taco Shells and Cheese

  • 8 soft flour tortillas or crunchy corn taco shells
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican cheese blend

Fresh Toppings

  • 1 avocado, diced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • 12 sliced jalapeños (optional)
  • Sour cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef Filling: Heat a drizzle of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, then add finely chopped onions and minced garlic. Once softened, crumble in the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Stir in chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, chili flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the spices with the meat.
  2. Add Tomatoes and Simmer: Add diced tomatoes or your favorite salsa to the beef mixture. Lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken slightly.
  3. Prepare the Taco Shells: Warm your taco shells or tortillas in the oven or on a dry skillet until soft and pliable or crispy, depending on your preference.
  4. Assemble the Tacos: Fill each shell with a generous spoonful of the chili beef mixture. Then, top with shredded cheese, diced avocado, chopped cilantro, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
  5. Add Final Toppings and Serve: Sprinkle sliced jalapeños or a dollop of sour cream for added flavor and creaminess. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use fresh spices for best flavor.
  • Drain excess fat after browning the beef for a less oily filling.
  • Lightly toast taco shells for added crunch and aroma.
  • Balance the heat with creamy toppings like avocado or sour cream.
  • Don’t overfill tacos to prevent sogginess and keep bites balanced.
