Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 cup Warm Water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil

Cheese Filling

  • 1 ½ to 2 cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese (or cheese blend such as mozzarella, cheddar, provolone, or pepper jack)

Optional Seasonings

  • Garlic Powder
  • Dried Oregano
  • Fresh Parsley
  • Melted Butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add flour, salt, and olive oil, then mix until a smooth dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until elastic and soft.
  2. Let the Dough Rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours or until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the Cheese Filling: While dough rises, shred mozzarella cheese or preferred cheese blend. Keep ready for stuffing.
  4. Roll Out and Shape Breadsticks: Punch down risen dough and roll into a ¼ inch thick rectangle. Cut strips 1 to 1½ inches wide. Place a generous line of cheese down the center of each strip, then fold or pinch dough to seal cheese completely inside.
  5. Final Rise and Bake: Arrange stuffed breadsticks on parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing apart. Cover loosely and let rise for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Add Flavors and Serve: Optionally brush hot breadsticks with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder, dried herbs, or parsley immediately after baking for extra flavor.

Notes

  • Seal the edges firmly to prevent cheese leakage during baking.
  • Use cheese at room temperature for even melting.
  • Avoid overbaking to keep breadsticks soft and moist.
  • Proper dough resting is crucial for tender, fluffy texture.
  • Try brushing with garlic-infused olive oil or herbs for added flavor.
