Air Fryer Onion Rings

Crispy Air Fryer Onion Rings made easy at home for a golden-brown, crunchy snack with less oil. Perfectly seasoned and air fried to deliver a delicious, lighter alternative to traditional deep-fried onion rings, ideal as a quick snack or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Onions

  • 2 large sweet or yellow onions, peeled and sliced into 1/2 inch rings

Breading

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for gluten-free version)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)

Seasonings

  • 1 tsp salt, divided
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper, divided
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika

Others

  • Cooking spray (for air fryer basket and onion rings)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into rings about 1/2 inch thick. Carefully separate the rings and discard any small inner pieces for better uniformity.
  2. Create the Breading Stations: Set up three bowls: one with flour mixed with a pinch of salt and pepper, one with beaten eggs, and one with seasoned breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder and paprika.
  3. Coat the Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring first into the flour, shaking off excess, then into the beaten eggs to moisten, and finally coat thoroughly with the seasoned breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs onto the rings to maximize crunch.
  4. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for a few minutes to ensure even, crispy cooking.
  5. Arrange and Cook: Place the breaded onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding. Lightly spray the onion rings with cooking spray to encourage browning. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through for even crispness.
  6. Serve Hot: Once golden and crispy, remove the onion rings carefully and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces for maximum enjoyment.

Notes

  • Choose large, firm onions for better shape and texture.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket to allow proper air circulation and crispiness.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for superior crunch compared to regular breadcrumbs.
  • Lightly coat onion rings with cooking spray to achieve a golden finish without deep frying.
  • Pat onion rings dry before breading to avoid soggy coatings and improve crispiness.
